Rory's interview
How did all start?
I had recently divorced, lost my father, and my job. I was on lunch at work one day and had to go home early with flu like symptoms that lasted a week.
Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?
Yes. Three and a half years.
What has been the most useful thing for you so far?
Discovering I can sometimes abort my attacks with marijuana and a heating pad.
What have been your biggest difficulties?
The physical pain. I live alone and have a hard time taking care of myself sometimes.
How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?
I don't have a life anymore.
What things have you stopped doing?
Work for the most part, travelling, backpack camping.
What do you think about the future?
I try to get through each day and don't look too far ahead. Hoping for remission.
So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?
17-22 I was super outgoing and the life of the party.
What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?
Go back to firefighting and EMS. Do some serious travelling.
Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?
keep your head up. You're not alone in this. A episode can't last forever.
