Mia's interview
How did all start?
It started with pain in my right wrist. I went to the hospital and got some x-rays, but without anything wrong to see. Two days later my mom got a call from the hospital to let me know I have to come in and see a specialist. I did so and was then diagnosed with Madelung Deformity.
Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?
I have a diagnose with Madelung Deformity.
What has been the most useful thing for you so far?
My mum to help me after surgeries.
What have been your biggest difficulties?
To have enough strength in my wrists to study, work and do household.
How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?
Not at all. My family are very supportive, but otherwise is doesn’t really affect any of them except my mum. She has to help a little bit once in a while.
What things have you stopped doing?
I’ve stopped doing sports where I use my hands. Now I’m just running at the gym, but sometimes I wish I could lift some weights.
What do you think about the future?
I think I’m gonna need some more help at some point. Maybe something to support everyday tasks, but I’m trying not to think too much about it now.
So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?
My years traveling. I have been abroad a few times, and I absolute love exploring new cultures!
What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?
Nothing different. My life is great even though I live with Madelung. It would just be nice to do the things without pain.
If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?
A happy and lucky life.
Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?
Just try not to think too much about it. Do what you want to do.
