A Polyarteritis Nodosa interview .

Gabe's interview

How did all start?

My issues started with swelling and pain in the legs followed by nodules just below the skin that would rupture and bruise. These spread to the forearms and chest and fatigue and pain increased steadily.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

It took me about a year to be diagnosed with P.A.N. They tested me for everything under the sun. Hep C, HIV, Cancer, Lupus, etc etc. Finally after a biopsy of one of the nodules and some blood work focused on the immune system they determined P.A.N was an appropriate diagnosis.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

My biggest difficulty is the treatment side effects. The high doses of Prednisone make me feel "stupid" often make me forget my words or thoughts. I was on Methotrexate which made me sick the entire weekend after taking it.

What things have you stopped doing?

I have been limited to the activities I have done in the past. I have had to give up coaching and riding my motorcycle as much as I used to. The biggest loss is not being able to keep up with my kids any more. Playing catch or simply enjoying the outdoors isn't as possible anymore.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

Don't give up on finding answers. Don't feel bad about questioning your doctor and DONT feel bad about firing one. You know your body best. Don't let a doctor tell you something that doesn't feel right.
