Clinical Information

A syndrome characterized by recurrent episodes of excruciating pain lasting several seconds or longer in the sensory distribution of the trigeminal nerve. Pain may be initiated by stimulation of trigger points on the face, lips, or gums or by movement of facial muscles or chewing. Associated conditions include multiple sclerosis, vascular anomalies, aneurysms, and neoplasms. (Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p187)
Can you imagine feeling a shock in your face as you brush your teeth or shave? if you have trigeminal neuralgia (tn), you may know exactly what it's like. You may feel extreme numbness, tingling or burning on a part of your face. Any vibration on your face, even from talking, can set it off. The condition may come and go, disappearing for days or even months. But the longer you have it, the less often it goes away. Your trigeminal nerve is responsible for sensations on your face. The cause of tn is probably a blood vessel pressing on the trigeminal nerve. Tumors and multiple sclerosis can also cause tn, but in some cases the cause is unknown.tn usually affects people over 50, especially women. Medicines and sometimes surgery can help with the pain.

I don't understand what this means, I am UK based but this is what the web says.

"ICD-9-CM 350.1 is a billable medical code that can be used to indicate a diagnosis on a reimbursement claim, however, 350.1 should only be used for claims with a date of service on or before September 30, 2015. For claims with a date of service on or after October 1, 2015, use an equivalent ICD-10-CM code (or codes)."

"G50.0 is a billable/specific ICD-10-CM code that can be used to indicate a diagnosis for reimbursement purposes."

The ICD9 code for Trigeminal Neuralgia is 350.1. The !CD10 code is G 50.0.

Incidentally, as of 2014, Trigeminal Neuralgia is listed as a disability, though receiving insurance or compensation is a whole other battle and requires the services of a competent attorney.
