Bladder Exstrophy Synonyms
Bladder exstrophy is a rare congenital condition characterized by the malformation of the urinary bladder and associated structures. It occurs when the lower abdominal wall and the front surface of the bladder fail to close properly during fetal development. This results in the bladder being exposed outside the body through a defect in the abdominal wall.
Bladder exstrophy is also known by several other names, including:
- Exstrophy of the Bladder: This term directly describes the condition, emphasizing the abnormal positioning of the bladder outside the body.
- Classic Bladder Exstrophy: This term is used to refer to the typical presentation of the condition, where the bladder is completely exposed and the pelvic bones are widely separated.
- Bladder Eversion: This term highlights the inversion or turning inside out of the bladder, which is a characteristic feature of bladder exstrophy.
- Epispadias-Exstrophy Complex: This term is used to describe a spectrum of congenital anomalies that includes bladder exstrophy, as well as epispadias, a condition where the urethra opens on the upper surface of the penis or in females, the clitoris.
- Open Bladder: This term emphasizes the exposed and open nature of the bladder in individuals with bladder exstrophy.
It is important to note that while these terms are used interchangeably, they all refer to the same underlying condition of bladder exstrophy.
