Alicia's interview
How did all start?
My wife had her first outbreak in spring 2017, which was only on her elbows and knees. It was closely followed by her second outbreak, which was all over. In spring 2018, she experienced a slow, minor outbreak.
Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?
My wife was formally diagnosed by a dermatologist. A second dermatologist has confirmed. It took about a month after the first symptoms to get referred to someone who knew what they were doing.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?
Strictly limiting certain foods and medicines and taking medication to control cold sores.
What have been your biggest difficulties?
emotional struggles
How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?
I do my best to be caring and supportive. It's awful to be so helpless when my wife is in so much pain.
What things have you stopped doing?
anything that might trigger a cold sore
What do you think about the future?
I want more research done on this disease so we could at least find a treatment.
Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?
Do lots of research. Encourage your loved one to connect with others who have chronic recurring illnesses. Acknowledge that their disease is real, even when they're not in the midst of an outbreak.
