A Cluster Headaches interview .

Jen's interview

How did all start?

I was 31 years old and started to get bad headaches every day for at least a month at a time starting in the fall. I didn't know what it was at that point. I took loads of OTC meds every day which didn't really help. Eventually, the headaches just stopped on their own and didn't return again for months.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

I do have a diagnosis. I believe I was diagnosed in my second year with clusters. I feel lucky that it didn't take longer.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

Oxygen and Imitrex nasal spray have helped the most.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

Being in pain when I'm out - at work, with friends, etc. It's impossible to focus on anything else or have a life while I'm in a cluster cycle. Emotionally it's quite draining as well. Not knowing when or if the headaches will end and watching months of your life go by in the mean time is terrifying and heart breaking.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

Absolutely. I pretty much have no life during cluster cycles. I barely speak to friends or family because I don't have the physical or emotional energy. I rarely make plans because I'm usually in too much pain to do anything. My friends and family know I have cluster headaches but I don't think anyone truly understands how debilitating they are.

What things have you stopped doing?

I rarely drink alcohol when in a cluster cycle. I've stopped pushing myself so hard, I've learned that never ends well.

What do you think about the future?

Honestly, I'm scared. I am currently in my longest cluster cycle ever and don't know if I will become chronic or be pain free ever again.

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

I think the best years of my life happened around age 14. Back when life was relatively simple, headache free and filled with fun, laughter and friends.

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

Oh wow, this is a tough one. I want to do everything!! Travel the world, get in shape, cook more, spend much more time with friends and family.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

My life has been tough but so am I.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

Don't give up on seeking treatment. Keep searching and talking to others with your condition. Stay up to date on new research and clinical trials. Give yourself a break when you need it.
