A Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma (ACC) interview .

Chanse's interview

How did all start?

In April 2015, I picked up special rice and chicken from Japanese Restaurant. Ate when I got home. After I ate I started having horrible pain in my right side. I couldn’t tell if I had eaten too much or if I had a kidney stone. I had no idea what was going on.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

Yes I do. I am now Stage IV metastatic diseasase. It took maybe a month or so to know because biopsy wasn’t an option without complete removal of the adrenal gland.

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

I’ve had a lot of radiation. I’ve completed EDP+M chemo therapy. I take mitotane. Unfortunately even with all these treatments, my disease continues to progress.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

Being able to be with my family when I can.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

Not being able to depend on myself to do everything anymore. Cancer spread to my arm and leg which required major surgeries and I still have chronic pain.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

Family hasn’t changed except that my parents are very supportive even when they are very sad. I do not get out much to see friends and I am unable to work.

What things have you stopped doing?

I use to excercise everyday. I would jog 2-4 miles a day, even during the humid 90 degree summers of Georgia. I’ve had to stop working.

What do you think about the future?

I’m not sure what to think. I know though that it is in God’s Will so I have learned to let go and let be what will be, be.

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

Anytime before the cancer. Specifically 2011-2015. Going on vacations with my special someone.

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

Travel the world.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

I take my time with whatever I am doing. I try to enjoy every moment that I am with someone I love. I appreciate all blessings and I am very spiritual.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

Take it one day at a time. Know that everyone has a different experience so don’t get too caught up in everyone’s story because that doesn’t mean it’ll be that way for you. Learn to appreciate all things in life and know that everything happens for a reason.
