My allodynia

Nov 24, 2017

Year Condition Began: 2005

I have pain from clothes. Mostly all clothes cause me pain. It is hard to find clothes that don't hurt. I have had this issue now for about 10 years, but only recently learned of this symptom. All clothes can be so uncomfortable for myself. I stay home a lot because of this issue. A lot of people may think this issue is all in your head, but this is a real issue. It is not all in your head.

What is Allodynia?

Allodynia means “other pain”. It is associated with very unusual kind of pain caused by something that is not painful in the normal case. It is a symptom of nerve damage.

Allodynia is an extreme sensitivity to touch, sound, vibration, barometric pressure changes, loud noises, wind/breeze, temperature, clothing, and even the gentle touch of a loved one. This makes it increasingly difficult on the spouses, children, and other family members; as their softest touch can now cause pain instead of comfort. If the patient has not been properly diagnosed yet and these sensations not properly explained, these symptoms can cause extreme duress and confusion to all involved.

Allodynia is a sympton from another condition. It could be from anything like fibromyalgia, lyme disease, CRPS/RSD, shingles and other conditions...

It is rare in the general population and commonly goes unnoticed. With tactile allodynia the sufferer might feel pain even from his/her clothes. Waistbands, bra straps, tags on shirts, etc can be uncomfortable and gives burning sensation.

Often sufferer with tactile allodynia are forced to spend a lot of time at home, due to the pain they get from wearing clothes. A lot of the people with this issue may feel isolated and alone.

Allodynia can get severe or may remain mild. It can affect the whole body or may be localized. It can flare up at time or may remain constant.

Some people also feel pain when they make a ponytail. This is called ponytail headache syndrome. This is also related to allodynia. It is really uncomfortable.

Also some people with allodynia can get really bad migraines that can last for days and weeks.

This condition makes sleeping very uncomfortable and leads to anxiety and depression. Some people find it difficult to sleep on the bed which was very comfortable to sleep on when they were not suffering with allodynia.

There are three kinds of allodynia:

Tactile allodynia is pain from the pressure of something against your skin. It can hurt to put on a shirt, wear glasses, or put your head on a pillow.

Mechanical allodynia is pain that starts when something rubs lightly against your skin.Things like the touch of a person's hand, running a brush through your hair, or water falling on your head in the shower can trigger it.

Thermal allodynia is pain that comes on in hot or cold temperatures. For instance, breathing in cold air can cause it.

The severity of allodynia varies widely from person to person. You rate allodynia by the frequency that each symptom occurs and also by how many different symptoms are present.

The exact cause of allodynia is not known.
