There is Some Hope

In 2009 at age 64 I got a nasty head cold. I lost my sense of smell and it has never returned. The thing that makes it hard for me is the lack of enjoyment of food or drink. I looked for help in several places (including the UPenn taste and smell center and Dr. Henken's practice in DC) but to no avail. I then did internet searches to see if anyone was doing research to find causes and possible treatments. I was disappointed to find that very little was going on. In 2013 I started a correspondence with the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. It seemed to me that they had the resources and infrastructure to tackle the problem but were not doing so. After several emails, phone calls and a visit, my wife and I agreed to make a series of contributions for them to start a research project. Shortly thereafter they launched _A Sense of Hope The Monell Anosmia Research Project._ Progress has been slow but steady since then and many others have contributed to the project. They are working on two separate tracks. One looking for a way to use stem cells to help those who have lost their smell because of viral infection or aging and one looking into congenital anosmia. While any possible breakthorughs are years away, at least now there is some hope.
I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which reduced the viral load initially.
