Felt ripping in chest, called 911, fireman said OK but took to hospital as a precaution, hospital said OK. I responded that I was not OK, I would pay for tests out of my own pocket, if necessary, and my mom died of an aortic rupture. Knowledge about my mothers death, knowing my body and being my own advocate saved my life.

Doctor ordered a CT scan, 3 minutes after scan I was rushed to a helicopter and flown to Boise. On the helicopter said I was authorizing any work the doctor thought was needed and not to wait on any decision.

Upper aorta was replaced, lower aorta has been treated medically.

Took the following lengths of time:

- One week to get out of the hospital and fly home

- Three weeks to work part time and not feel "beat up"

- Six weeks to work full time and be able to drive


Full recovery to new normal took three years, but 80 percent in six months and 90 percent in a year. Having a very supportive wife, children and mother-in-law was extremely helpful in my emotional and physical recovery.

After two years, saw a therapist for about 3 months, which helped deal with anxious feelings at night and allowed me to relax. Pride delayed the process about 18 months, which I wished did not happen.

Being OK with my wife lifting heavy objects and carrying the heavy backpack was difficult but decided I just had to accept it.
