I had surgery on my shoulder and 5 weeks later was covered in bruises. I went to my primary doctor that immediately knew something was very wrong. I was sent for labs and the results were my WBC was zero, my plateketsbwere less than 2 and my hemoglobin was around 7. I was sent to a UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh for a consult that resulted in a bone marrow biopsy the following morning. The result was VSAA and I was transferred to UPMC Shadyside, 7West (the reverse isolation unit) and the next morning started my path to HATG. I did not have a BIT, and now, 9 years later, am transfusion free, cyclosporine free and doing well.
