Bob M's interview

How did all start?

Severe coughing, sleepiness, dark mucous plug.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

Diagnosed in March 2020. I took about 20 months.

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

A pulmonologist quickly sent blood work and mucous samples to Mayo Clinic. And eventually determined I had ABPA.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

I take Dulera inhaler twice per day, and Montelukast at night.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

My condition affects my some of my favorite exercises, especially biking. However I manage by practicing breathing techniques and also choose when to exercise based upon weather, especially humid conditions.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

My wife is always concerned especially when I have occasional flare ups that reminder her of the worst time of my condition, before it was diagnosed. I couldn’t sleep or breathe due to the constant coughing and mucous. I have to be careful around my grandchildren when they have a virus because I sometimes catch it and then it stimulates my ABPA condition. At those times, my pulmonologist puts me on an anti biotic with Prednisone script to calm down the flare up.

What things have you stopped doing?

I have limited my bike riding to some degree, but try to remain as active as before being diagnosed.

What do you think about the future?

I remain optimistic, and try to manage my condition with an alertness to head off further decline.

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

Best years were raising my children when I seemed to be extremely active and involved, particularly with coaching there sporting activities while being unaware of my future ABPA condition.

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

Exercise more freely, without compromised breathing.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

It has been a journey, mostly good times, and now learning to live a retired life to full enjoyment, while increasing my faith in Jesus Christ.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

Find a good pulmonologist, with good bed side manners that you have can put your trust in. Mine was a life savor, and allows me to reach out to him at any time I have a concern about my condition. He responds immediately and intends to keep me on course to live out my life to the fullest by managing my condition. He encourages me to live life as normal with no restrictions, but also doesn’t want me to hesitate to reach out to him when I have any concerns.
