Causes of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / M.E.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME), is a complex and debilitating condition characterized by extreme fatigue that cannot be explained by any underlying medical condition. While the exact cause of CFS/ME remains unknown, researchers have identified several potential factors that may contribute to the development of this condition.

1. Viral Infections

One potential cause of CFS/ME is viral infections. Some studies suggest that certain viral infections, such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), and enteroviruses, may trigger or contribute to the development of CFS/ME. These viruses can disrupt the immune system and lead to persistent fatigue and other symptoms associated with the condition.

2. Immune System Dysfunction

Another important factor in CFS/ME is immune system dysfunction. Research indicates that individuals with CFS/ME often exhibit abnormalities in their immune system function. This dysfunction may involve an overactive immune response, chronic inflammation, or impaired cellular immunity. These immune system dysfunctions can contribute to the persistent fatigue and other symptoms experienced by individuals with CFS/ME.

3. Hormonal Imbalances

Hormonal imbalances, particularly involving the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, have also been implicated in the development of CFS/ME. The HPA axis plays a crucial role in regulating stress responses and maintaining energy balance. Disruptions in this system can lead to abnormalities in cortisol and other hormone levels, contributing to the fatigue and other symptoms associated with CFS/ME.

4. Genetic Predisposition

Genetic factors may also play a role in the development of CFS/ME. Studies have shown that certain genetic variations may increase the susceptibility to developing the condition. These genetic factors may affect immune system function, energy metabolism, and the body's response to stress, making individuals more vulnerable to CFS/ME.

5. Environmental Triggers

Environmental triggers such as exposure to toxins, chemicals, or certain infections may contribute to the development of CFS/ME. Some individuals may experience the onset of CFS/ME following a specific event, such as a viral infection, physical trauma, or exposure to environmental toxins. These triggers can disrupt normal bodily functions and lead to the development of chronic fatigue and other symptoms.

6. Psychological Factors

Psychological factors such as stress, trauma, and psychological distress may not directly cause CFS/ME but can exacerbate symptoms and contribute to the persistence of the condition. Stressful life events, such as major life changes or emotional trauma, can impact the immune system, hormonal balance, and overall well-being, potentially worsening the symptoms of CFS/ME.

7. Dysregulation of Energy Metabolism

Energy metabolism dysregulation is another potential cause of CFS/ME. Studies have shown that individuals with CFS/ME may have impaired energy production and utilization at the cellular level. This dysfunction can lead to reduced energy availability, resulting in the characteristic fatigue and exhaustion experienced by individuals with CFS/ME.

In conclusion, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) is a complex condition with multiple potential causes. While the exact cause remains unknown, factors such as viral infections, immune system dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, psychological factors, and energy metabolism dysregulation are believed to contribute to the development and persistence of CFS/ME. Further research is needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms and develop effective treatments for this debilitating condition.

There is no cause but many believe it was from a Entrovirus

Research was sparse and disjointed until 3 or 4 years ago, but there has been an avalanche since then. There is evidence for it being an immune disfunction, which effects a variety of tissues by inhibiting a crucial enzyme which plays a part in sugar metabolism, resulting in an excess of lactate (causing low energy and muscle pain). There are many other theories. The research is available on websites like www.meassociation.org and www.openmedicinefoundation.org.

It is NOT a psychological condition.

Viral infection, Lyme disease (tick bite), Mould contamination

The cause is not known at this time. There does seem to be some link to immune & gut microbes though. There's also been links to brain matter size, past illnesses & other stresses.
I got CFS after I quit nursing my daughter. Wasn't too bad till after I had 2 major surgeries & 2 minor surgeries all within 4 months. I don't know if was all the hours of anesthesia or the stress or what but my health completely deteriorated after surgeries & continues to do so every year.

They are not certain. Maybe it's triggered by viral infection like mononucleosis or hepatitis B vaccination. MAYBE.

Probably viral for the majority of us, but still unknown.

It ranges from a quick death from cardiac arrest, suicide, co-infections & cancers versus 30 years of being homebound & bedridden (a tremendous burden on the patient & family). The last hope is for a cure, and I put my remaining money & faith behind Open Medicine Foundation (www.omf.ngo).

There are theories but none are conclusive.

I do not know.
Strong evidence is pointing to ME being a viral related illness.

Im.not a doctor!!
Research is still being undertaken but its a neuro immune disease poss by environmental factors and viruss

They are not known at this time. I think the cause could very well be poisons and vaccines. For myself I was a small, thin child. I was given the usual American vaccines. Then at age 6 I was given the African vaccines, as I was going to live in the tropics. I happen to believe it was all just too much.

A good environment, and good organic food are at least helpful.

The causes are unknown but there are suspicions that Lyme disease, the Epstein-Barr virus, exposure to mold and more may have an influence.

There is a pathogen that they have not seen before
and it will eventually be found

Chronic or acute chemical exposure. Most people don't even have it on their radar. CFS/ME is an environmental illness. Take a look at this video: https://www.facebook.com/ChemicalsAndChronicIllness/videos/482283219312338

They don't know the cause but it often happens after a virus. The Entrovirus has been suspected.

I think mine was caused by having mono twice (Epstein Barr virus)

Posted Jan 17, 2021 by Emmy 2250
There is not one cause of ME. Most people respond their disease was triggered by a (viral)infection, but for some it was a surgery, or the cause it unknown. The consensus is that anything that can 'activate' your immunesystem can be the trigger for ME. Especially if there are already multiple people in your family who have it.

Until today there is a cause-committed of the EM.
I personally think that one of the causes is viral.
They can also be toxic substances (lead, etc), amalgam, certain vaccines.
I've known about the transmission of oral herpes kissing a newborn on the mouth, the patient died 8 days...
And there may be a genetic factor.
