How did all start?
I had a horrible headache when I was 18. I could barely walk with the pain. The GP diagnosed sinusitis and so went 12 years of misdiagnosed until a doctor joined the dots with my symptoms.
Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?
12 years
For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?
Pain medications, antidepressants
What has been the most useful thing for you so far?
Nothing yet aside from time off work
What have been your biggest difficulties?
Exhaustion, anxiety and stress. Also trying to get other people to understand that it's not just like any other headache
How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?
My family are useless. My partner is wonderful and some of my friends have been very supportive.
What things have you stopped doing?
Drinking alcohol, cycling. I cut back on socialising and try to avoid crowds.
What do you think about the future?
I worry that my CH will turn chronic.
So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?
My mid 20s were relatively pain free. I pursued a PhD, travelled and just really enjoyed life.
What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?
Just not have to worry every time I feel even a mild twinge of pain.
Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?
Keep seeking second and third opinions until you find a doctor who is understanding and wants to listen and help.
