This results in a gap or hole in one or more parts of the eye, such as the iris, retina, choroid, or optic disc. The symptoms of coloboma can vary depending on the location and severity of the defect.

Iris Coloboma: When the iris, which is the colored part of the eye, is affected by coloboma, it can lead to a distinctively shaped pupil. The pupil may appear keyhole-shaped, teardrop-shaped, or have a notch or gap in its border. This abnormality can cause sensitivity to light (photophobia) and blurry vision.

Retinal Coloboma: Coloboma of the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, can cause vision problems. Individuals with retinal coloboma may experience decreased visual acuity, poor night vision, blind spots, or a loss of peripheral vision. The severity of these symptoms can vary depending on the size and location of the coloboma.

Choroidal Coloboma: Coloboma of the choroid, which is the layer of blood vessels that nourishes the retina, can lead to vision impairment. It may cause blurred or distorted vision, reduced visual acuity, or the perception of missing areas in the visual field.

Optic Nerve Coloboma: Coloboma of the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the eye to the brain, can result in significant visual impairment. It may cause decreased visual acuity, poor depth perception, nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), or a complete loss of vision in the affected eye.

Other associated abnormalities: Coloboma can sometimes occur as part of a syndrome or be associated with other birth defects.
