Symptoms of Cysticercosis

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection caused by the larvae of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. The symptoms of cysticercosis can vary depending on the location and number of cysts formed in the body. In some cases, individuals may remain asymptomatic for years, while in others, the symptoms can be severe and debilitating.

Neurological Symptoms:

Neurological symptoms are the most common and serious manifestations of cysticercosis. When the larvae invade the central nervous system, they can cause a range of neurological disorders, including:

  • Seizures: Seizures are the most common symptom of neurocysticercosis. They can be focal or generalized and may vary in frequency and intensity.

  • Headaches: Persistent headaches, often severe, can occur due to the inflammation caused by the presence of cysts in the brain.

  • Altered mental status: Cysticercosis can lead to confusion, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, and other cognitive impairments.

  • Stroke-like symptoms: In some cases, cysticercosis can cause symptoms similar to a stroke, such as weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, or vision problems.

  • Hydrocephalus: When cysts block the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, it can lead to an accumulation of fluid in the brain, causing symptoms like headache, nausea, vomiting, and changes in vision.

Ocular Symptoms:

Cysticercosis can also affect the eyes, leading to various ocular symptoms, including:

  • Blurred vision: Cysts in the eye can cause blurred or distorted vision.

  • Floaters: Small specks or spots that float across the field of vision may be present.

  • Eye pain: Cysts can cause pain, redness, and irritation in the affected eye.

  • Loss of vision: In severe cases, cysticercosis can lead to partial or complete loss of vision.

Muscular Symptoms:

In some instances, cysticercosis can affect the muscles, leading to symptoms such as:

  • Muscle pain: Affected muscles may become painful and tender.

  • Lumps or nodules: Small, palpable lumps or nodules may develop under the skin, particularly in the muscles.

  • Weakness: Muscular weakness or difficulty in moving certain body parts may occur.

Other Symptoms:

Depending on the location of the cysts, cysticercosis can also cause a variety of other symptoms, including:

  • Gastrointestinal symptoms: If the larvae are ingested, they can cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

  • Respiratory symptoms: In rare cases, cysticercosis can affect the lungs, leading to symptoms such as cough, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.

  • Skin symptoms: Subcutaneous cysts can cause skin swelling, redness, and itching.

  • Systemic symptoms: In severe cases, cysticercosis can lead to fever, fatigue, weight loss, and general malaise.

If you suspect you may have cysticercosis or are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare professional can perform diagnostic tests and recommend appropriate treatment options based on the severity and location of the infection.
