Linda's interview

How did all start?

I don't remember how old I was when I started picking. I know I used to pick at mosquito bites when I was a kid. The first time I remember being told not to pick was when I had chickenpox when I was 15.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

Yes, I was finally diagnosed when I was 50.

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

I don't understand this question. I have been treated for more illnesses than I can count. As far as Dermatillomania is concerned, I have seen my family doctor, a dermatologist, a psychiatrist, and a therapist. The dermatologist was the most useful because she told me what products would be the best for my skin and she prescribed a steroid cream for the redness and inflammation.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

Joining a support group on facebook.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

Not picking at rough spots and scabs on my face and arms. Definitely not picking at my new tattoos. Most of all, going outside without makeup on at the insistence of my therapist.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

My daughter is constantly telling me to stop picking when she catches me picking. The condition of my skin is a big part of why I no longer date. I also don't go out anymore since I stopped wearing makeup.

What things have you stopped doing?

Dating and going out.

What do you think about the future?

I feel pretty hopeless about the future when it comes to my derma because I don't think I'll ever stop picking.

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

The best 19 months of my life have been the ones since my grandson was born. He really brightens my days. I have been helping my daughter raise him. It's like being a mother, only better.

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

Date, wear shorts, go swimming, and go out.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

My life is a never-ending struggle.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

See a dermatologist. See a therapist. Join online support groups. Learn to crochet, knit, do needlepoint, or anything that involves using both of your hands. I learned to crochet by watching YouTube videos. Throw away your tools (tweezers, safety pins, etc.). Don't use a magnifying mirror. Get thick acrylic nails put on. It is almost impossible to pick with acrylic nails. Keep a journal. Smile and love yourself.
