Enterobiasis symptoms

Enterobiasis, also known as pinworm infection, is a common parasitic infection caused by the roundworm Enterobius vermicularis. It primarily affects children and is highly contagious. The infection is characterized by the presence of pinworms in the intestines and the symptoms they cause.

Symptoms of Enterobiasis:

1. Itching around the anus: One of the most common symptoms of enterobiasis is intense itching around the anus. This itching is caused by the female pinworms laying their eggs in the skin folds around the anus. The itching is often worse at night and can lead to disturbed sleep.

2. Restlessness and irritability: Due to the persistent itching, individuals with enterobiasis may experience restlessness and irritability. This can be particularly noticeable in children, leading to difficulty concentrating and behavioral changes.

3. Insomnia: The itching sensation can be so intense that it disrupts sleep patterns, leading to insomnia. This can further contribute to irritability and fatigue.

4. Abdominal pain: Some individuals with enterobiasis may experience mild to moderate abdominal pain. This pain is usually generalized and may be accompanied by bloating or discomfort.

5. Loss of appetite: Enterobiasis can cause a decrease in appetite, leading to weight loss or poor weight gain, especially in children. This symptom is more common in severe or long-lasting infections.

6. Restless sleep: The itching sensation can cause restless sleep, leading to frequent waking up during the night. This can result in daytime fatigue and tiredness.

7. Secondary bacterial infections: In some cases, excessive scratching of the anal area can lead to secondary bacterial infections. This can cause redness, swelling, and pain in the affected area.

8. Vaginal itching (in females): Female pinworms can migrate from the anus to the vagina, leading to vaginal itching and discomfort. This symptom is more common in adult women.

9. Visible worms: In severe cases, pinworms may be visible in the stool or around the anus. However, this is not a common symptom and may not always be present.

It is important to note that not everyone infected with pinworms will experience symptoms. In some cases, individuals may be asymptomatic carriers, unknowingly spreading the infection to others.

If you suspect enterobiasis based on the symptoms mentioned above, it is crucial to seek medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment. A healthcare professional may perform a tape test, where a piece of transparent tape is applied to the anal area to collect pinworm eggs for microscopic examination.

Treatment: Enterobiasis is typically treated with anthelmintic medications, such as mebendazole or albendazole, which kill the pinworms. Additionally, practicing good hygiene, such as regular handwashing, keeping nails short, and washing bedding and clothing in hot water, can help prevent reinfection and the spread of the infection to others.
