Enterobiasis, also known as pinworm infection, is a common intestinal parasitic infection caused by the roundworm Enterobius vermicularis. It primarily affects children and is highly contagious. The infection is prevalent worldwide, particularly in areas with poor sanitation and overcrowding.
Symptoms: The most common symptom of enterobiasis is intense itching around the anus, especially at night. This itching is caused by the female pinworms laying eggs in the skin folds around the anus. Other symptoms may include restlessness, irritability, disturbed sleep, and mild abdominal pain.
Transmission: Enterobiasis spreads through the ingestion of pinworm eggs, which can be found on contaminated surfaces such as bedding, clothing, or toys. The eggs are easily transferred from person to person through direct contact or by inhaling airborne eggs.
Diagnosis and Treatment: Diagnosis of enterobiasis is typically done by examining the perianal region for the presence of adult worms or eggs using a transparent adhesive tape test. Treatment involves the use of anthelmintic medications, which kill the adult worms and their eggs. Additionally, practicing good hygiene, such as regular handwashing and maintaining a clean living environment, is crucial to prevent reinfection and the spread of the infection.
Prevention: Preventive measures include regular handwashing, especially after using the toilet and before eating, keeping nails short, washing bedding and clothing frequently, and avoiding scratching the anal area. Educating children and their caregivers about proper hygiene practices is essential in preventing the transmission of enterobiasis.
