What is Hypoparathyroidism

Hypoparathyroidism is a medical condition characterized by insufficient production or secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by the parathyroid glands. These small glands, located in the neck, play a crucial role in regulating calcium and phosphorus levels in the body. PTH helps maintain the balance of these minerals by stimulating the release of calcium from bones, increasing calcium absorption in the intestines, and reducing calcium excretion through the kidneys.

When a person has hypoparathyroidism, their body experiences low levels of PTH, leading to imbalances in calcium and phosphorus. This can result in a range of symptoms, including muscle cramps, tingling or numbness in the extremities, fatigue, anxiety, and even seizures. Additionally, individuals with this condition may have low levels of calcium in their blood (hypocalcemia) and high levels of phosphorus.
