Marília's interview
How did all start?
In November 2014. I had a bleeding and went to the emergency room. It was all very fast.
Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?
The doctors were very efficient and my diagnosis was closed in only 1 day. All the tests were done the same day I went to the hospital and soon the diagnosis was given.
For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?
Hematologist.
What has been the most useful thing for you so far?
Support groups and associations.
What have been your biggest difficulties?
Get a new job because I lost my old job when I got sick.
How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?
Many friends backed off and that was good because I could recognize the value of a few good people. My family has been by my side since the beginning.
What things have you stopped doing?
I stopped drinking alcohol and going out for parties at night. I avoid places filled with many people because I do not have a spleen and I try to take care of my immune system.
What do you think about the future?
Life is too beautiful to be lived in, and the future holds a chance for me and others to heal. I believe a lot in the power of medicine.
So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?
Certainly it was the years before my illness. My twenties. I had a successful career, a lot of friends and made many trips. After the ITP, I had to change many habits and some things were left behind.
What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?
The ITP is part of me and I do not know if my life would be very different without it. I think I would live the same way and maybe have fewer responsibilities.
If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?
The experience is ephemeral. Life is eternal.
Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?
Be strong! Fight a good fight! Do not despair and do not expect understanding from other people. Understand that this struggle is yours and individual.
