A Lipedema interview .

Jenna's interview

How did all start?

My Dr said I have had it since birth. It progressed during puberty, and went full blown after my second pregnancy in 2007.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

Yes. It took 10 years to find a doctor who knew what I had.

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

I am treated by a Vascular specialist in Cleveland Clinic for Lipedema-lymphedema and Dercums. I also see a Hematologist for Anemia and blood clotting disorder

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

The keto diet was helpful until I had a Gastritis flare up. It works wonders for so many others though. MLD therapy is also very helpful.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

Getting a diagnosis was my biggest difficulty. I struggle daily with severe leg pain and am unable to walk without assistance from a walker and wheelchair.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

My family and friends have been very supportive and helpful.

What things have you stopped doing?

I have not been able to work since 2015. I am also unable to stand for more than 2 minutes, walk without assistance, sit without my legs up, walk long distances at all, cook, and clean.

What do you think about the future?

I'm am hopeful that one day I will be able to have gastric bypass surgery and water jet assisted liposuction

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

My best years were my adolescent and teen years, as far as being mobile and being able to do many things for myself.

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

I would love to be able to walk long distances, travel, visit an amusement park, take a cruise, be more active with my family.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

I'm happy, but wish I could be more mobile.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

Seek treatment as soon as possible! Don't give up until you get answers for your condition.
