Beth's interview

How did all start?

I had a 3 day vertigo with vomiting episode august 2015 that landed me in the hospital. I ahve been told i had Menieres many years before but never felt anything like that. Also had previously been diagnosed with BPPV so tried the maneuver and it made me worse. Then i had debilitating attacks every 3 days or so for several months.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

The dr immediately said it was menieres disease

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

i see and ent specialist at UW Madison WI and he has done the endolymphatic sac decompression and the gentamicin shots and of course i take valium and meclizine and promethizine too also doing vestibular therapy too

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

the combination of things has helped

What have been your biggest difficulties?

menieres is unpredictable - you never know when you will be completely debilitated or for how long

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

i limit social activities and my family is very tired of me being sick

What things have you stopped doing?

going anywhere alone, drinking coffee and pop, and eating salty foods, cannot look up, have to watch every step so i dont fall

What do you think about the future?

hoping it will get better but not always optimistic

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

when my kids were young- i loved being a full time mom

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

visit my grandchildren it is too far to ride in a car bc it will make me have an attack

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

Limited, Frustrating and exhausting.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

keep trying treatments and diet changes dont give up it can get better- mine went from attacks every 3 days to every 5 days but still have daily dizziness and balance issues. Educate your family and social circle so they understand
