Laela's interview
How did all start?
Feeling short breathed and leading up to heaviness of the chest.
Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?
I had an MRI scan which showed I had this disease and it took about 3 weeks to get diagnosed.
What has been the most useful thing for you so far?
Finding out all I could about it and knowing what I could hope to expect.
What have been your biggest difficulties?
Coping with everyday life. The simple things like talking for a short period of time without getting exhausted and out of breath. The chest pain was difficult at times.
How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?
I was unable to travel for a very long time. Family relationships have become stoner through this.
What things have you stopped doing?
I had to stop going to the gym, my dance classes, I stopped my daily fast paved walks, basically anything that required using my energy.
What do you think about the future?
It's uncertain for me. I was given the all clear over a year ago, but am risk of it developing again.
So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?
This past year has been the best. I've felt good, I've had a holiday abroad I've been walking again, dancing and have excersised too.
What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?
Lead a normal life, the way I used to.
If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?
At the moment it is fraught, but happy.
Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?
Your body dictates what you can or can't do, so listen to it, act on it and think positive thoughts.
