Living with Necrotizing Fasciitis

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but serious bacterial infection that affects the skin, underlying tissues, and fascia. It can progress rapidly and cause severe damage to the body. Coping with this condition requires a combination of medical treatment, emotional support, and lifestyle adjustments. Here are some important aspects to consider when living with necrotizing fasciitis:

1. Seek Immediate Medical Attention

Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial for managing necrotizing fasciitis. If you suspect you have this condition, it is vital to seek immediate medical attention. Contact your healthcare provider or go to the emergency room as soon as possible.

2. Follow the Treatment Plan

Once diagnosed, your healthcare team will develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific situation. This may include:

  • Antibiotics: Intravenous antibiotics are typically administered to combat the bacterial infection.

  • Surgical Debridement: Surgical removal of dead or infected tissue is often necessary to prevent the infection from spreading.

  • Wound Care: Proper wound care, including dressing changes and cleaning, is essential for healing and preventing further complications.

  • Pain Management: Medications may be prescribed to help manage pain during the recovery process.

It is crucial to adhere to the treatment plan prescribed by your healthcare team and attend all follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.

3. Emotional Support

Living with necrotizing fasciitis can be emotionally challenging. It is important to seek emotional support from loved ones, friends, or support groups. Sharing your feelings and experiences with others who understand can provide comfort and help you cope with the emotional impact of the condition.

4. Educate Yourself

Knowledge is power when it comes to managing necrotizing fasciitis. Educate yourself about the condition, its symptoms, treatment options, and potential complications. However, it is important to rely on reputable sources such as medical professionals or trusted organizations to ensure accurate information.

5. Practice Good Hygiene

Maintaining good hygiene is crucial to prevent secondary infections and promote healing. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions on wound care, handwashing, and overall cleanliness. Keep the affected area clean and dry, and avoid touching it with unwashed hands.

6. Nutritious Diet and Physical Activity

A healthy diet rich in essential nutrients can support your body's healing process. Consult with a registered dietitian to develop a meal plan that meets your specific nutritional needs. Additionally, engage in appropriate physical activity as recommended by your healthcare provider to maintain overall well-being.

7. Monitor for Recurrence or Complications

Even after successful treatment, necrotizing fasciitis can have long-term effects. Regularly monitor the affected area for any signs of recurrence or complications, such as persistent pain, redness, swelling, or discharge. Report any concerning symptoms to your healthcare provider immediately.

8. Stay Positive and Seek Professional Help

Living with necrotizing fasciitis can be challenging, both physically and emotionally. It is important to maintain a positive mindset and seek professional help if needed. Mental health professionals can provide valuable support and guidance to help you navigate the emotional impact of the condition.

Remember, each individual's experience with necrotizing fasciitis is unique, and it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance.

I feel that you can be happy even with having had NF. Counceling is important, to talk to someone about your feelings of having NF. Trying to stay positive is important. I know we all have days when we feel defeated, "why me?" I asked and still ask myself. Focus on the positive. For me, beleiving in a higher power has been helpful; along with support from others.

Some wounds may take longer to heal and require extra care even after healed. Be mindful of cleansing properly, and not hurting already sensitive skin and tissue.

Appreciate every little advance you have. I was happy the first day I could get dressed, it took six months. Make a joke out of what you went through. I call my left leg a “Franken-leg”. It’s cobbled together like Frankenstein. Appreciate what you can do, get help with what you can’t do. I love taking a shower-but I need help. I’m just glad I can do it. That took me 7 months. Get everything by ready for cooking before you start.

As I stated, I had extensive skin grafts after they excised my right lower leg. My self esteem has suffered quite a bit. I no longer feel I can wear shorts or go swimming.Everyone tells me how lucky I am that I didn't lose my leg or die...and I know that..but it's still hard. People are grossed out by my leg...even my husband. It's a catastrophic thing to have necrotizing facitis. You have to learn to be happy with your new body image.
