A Ocular Motor Apraxia interview , Social Anxiety Disorder.

Rose_Puff's interview

How did all start?

When I was little I was diagnosed with OMA ( Ocular Motor Apraxia) and didn't realise that I had it until I was told when I was 8 years old and didn't understand it until I was 13 years old!

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

Yes I was diagnosed when I was an infant and understood what I had when I was 13.

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

I have not been assigned any specialities and have been coping well without them.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

Things like : being able to get disabled access in theme parks or getting a friend who is 14+ into an event or activity free with me

What have been your biggest difficulties?

Trying to look in a direction and I physically can't is a difficulty to me and I always though it was just me being weird. But then I found out that it is a common symptom of OMA.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

Apart from benefiting them with free accesses to things etc. The only thing that I worry is how people can stare and how I always think that they think that I am weird.

What things have you stopped doing?

Nothing at all! I can do whatever I like even if I have OMA.

What do you think about the future?

I see it like everyone else - the only thing that I worry is when I will attempt my driving license and them say no because of my OMA.

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

The best part of OMA probably benefits me and whoever with me due to it being said to be a 'disability' This means that I can skip theme park cues etc.

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

Mostly I can do whatever everyone else could do - the only thing I would improve if I didn't have OMA was my head jerking - its quite embarrassing sometimes when i'm twitching and looking in the wrong direction!

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

I like to think of it as if my life was a blank canvas- where I could draw and paint whatever I liked; and that there was a blank space that I could never paint over which eventually I excepted it for making my piece of art which I call life unique...

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

You will adjust as you grow up and even if you think your alone and that no one else understands your struggles - your wrong.
