30 Years Of Pain

Dec 30, 2015

I was initially diagnosed with a Miniscus Fiscus at the age of 5.  My mum had taken me to A&E a few times by this point after I would fall down the stairs or just fall over randomly (this was my knee giving in).  I was eventually referred to an orthopaedic specialist at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen, Shropshire who discovered the Miniscus Fiscus.  This meant the cartilage in my knee was too big so at the age of 6 I had surgery to correct this.

We thought the pain would ease afterwards, but it didn't.  On a follow up appointment, the consultant discovered OCD (Osteo Chondritis Dissicans).  He determined that I would be in a wheelchair by the age of 21 and that the condition would quite possible spread to other joints.

Skip through a few years and a few surgeries to clean out the knee, and remove pieces of loose bone, I was referred to a different consultant as the previous one only dealt with under 16's.  This consultant was a leading professor in his field and wanted to try a new groundbreaking surgery called OSCELL.  This meant encouraging bone to heal itself using cartilage from my shin bone.  It didn't take at first and after 6 years, they decided to redo it.  When they go inside my leg, they found it had started to work and decided to just clean my knee out instead.

The most recent surgery I had was a femoral osteotomy.  A registrar of the consultant discovered that my thigh bone wasn't straight so surgery was required to straighten it.  I had my thigh bone broken, re-aligned and a metal plate put in to hold it all in place.

A year later, more surgery to remove the metal plate.  I later discovered that they had trouble as the bone had healed over the screws so they struggled to get it out again.

Follow up appointments from there in 2013 (It's the only date I fully remember as it was a month after my mothers death) I was told that there was nothing they could do at this stage and to go back in 5 years.

So now I await an appointment for 2018 for follow up appointments.  Given how much pain and locking I STILL get in my knee, I hope they have some better answers for me.
