Story about Osteogenesis Imperfecta .

My life with OI

Feb 5, 2016

When i was 18 months i fell down the stairs at my grandparents house and suffered many complicated broken bones. At two years old i was in the care of my nana and grandad and i fell over and broke my leg, the doctors at the local hospital got social services involved and i was referred to Sheffield Childrens Hospital for a DXA scan and blood tests. My results came back that i had type 1 Osteo-genesis Imperfecta. After the diagnosis, life became easier as we knew what to avoid and when i started school i only broke my arm at school when i jumped off the mat in PE and lost my footing and fell on my arm - so basically what could've happened to a normal child. When i was in year 3 iwas the head of the girls football team and then in October 2008, i broke my fibula and tibula. I was in cast for 16 weeks and then i started physiotherapy at the local hospital. My physio suggested i try hydrotherapy at my local swimming poool and i did. It felt great to be back in the water after i had got out of cast. When i got out of the swimming pool, my leg gave way and i fell and snapped my femur on the step in the changing room. Social services got involved again as the dotors at my local hospital were making out my parents and broke my leg, dragged me swimming then pushed me over. In August 2009 i got beat up when prtecting my cousins from some older boys and i suffered a severely shattered arm, three broken ribs and a fractured femur. I was then reffered for more regular check ups with Professor Bishop at Sheffield Childrens Hospital. It was then that i found out i was one of the rare people where the bone collage has weakened due to a major traumer, my arm, and i am now a confirmed type 4. Proffessor Bishop  started me on the pamidronate in June 2010 and i have been on it ever since. I have had many fractures but not complicated and i have felt better in myself in the sense that i now have more energy and i have found who my true friends are. I've found, meeting friends with the same condition as i have has really helped me through the tough times and when my baby sister was born in 2011 with the same condition but with confirmd type 4, i have been able to help her understand what she can and can't do and help her look on the brightside!
