Kathy's interview

How did all start?

It started with taking corticosteroids for a chronic cough.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

There has still not been a diagnosis as far as why I have the chronic cough. I just found out about two months ago that I now have osteonecrosis from the steroid usage.

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

I've been treated with corticosteroids for asthma and allergies. Because of those treatments killing the blood supply to my femur, I have now had a right total hip replacement.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

A Facebook group with people who have the same disease. Have learned a lot.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

My difficulty is the aching pain that never seems to go away in my hip, clear down to my knee.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

I have had great support from family and friends.

What things have you stopped doing?

Because of the chronic cough, I have quit attending church and going to the movies. I dread weddings, funerals, graduations, etc. because I worry I will have a major coughing attack.

What do you think about the future?

Even though I am in constant pain, I am hopeful about the future. I know that there is some research going on dealing with stem cell usage to help restore blood flow to dying bones.

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

Probably my 40's and 50's. The pain wasn't as bad as it is now. My husband and I took several long motorcycle trips. We went on a couple of cruises and enjoyed them very much.

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

If I didn't have this condition, I would like to do more traveling. Right now, it is too painful to do much walking.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

What a long strange trip it has been!

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

Take it one day at a time. Try not to let pain get in the way of having a great life!
