A Osteonecrosis interview .

Julie's interview

How did all start?

ICU hospital stay with high doses of steroids and IV levaquin for bilateral pneumonia and respiratory failure. Am steroid dependent asthmatic

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

yes. 4 months the first time around. second time I knew what it was, but took a month to get into see the doctor to get the MRI ordered.

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

Ankle foot surgeon for the AVN in foot/tibia knee replacement specialist for my knee

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

seeking out a surgeon to do surgery immediately. The sooner you have surgery the sooner you can get back to your life. Depending upon where your ON is, the sooner it is found and treated, it can sometimes be treated without having to have joint replacements - but you need to get treatment asap

What have been your biggest difficulties?

I am no longer able to perform my job duties and have had to switch to a desk job.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

I am extremely lucky that my family has been very supportive and helpful through it all. The same for my friends.

What things have you stopped doing?

my profession. I can't kneel, run or jog anymore

What do you think about the future?

My future is great - I may have limitations, but I am alive and pain free

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

my early 40's. Went on a safari to the Serengeti

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

other than continue practicing in my profession - i don't feel like there are life things that i can't do.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

Lots of ups and downs but a great life

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

Don't stop seeking for a doctor who will treat you. That may mean traveling out of state. If that is what it takes to save your bones, save your sanity then it is worth it. Living in pain and having to go to pain management and not being able to work, having your relationships suffer is NOT living.
