A Osteonecrosis interview , Osteochondritis Dissecans.

Evangelia's interview

How did all start?

It all starts in 1998 when I had my first ankle injury.. After that my ankle just turned 4 more times and the last time back in 2016 blood vessels broke, that causes the problem with blood flow to the bone. In March, 2018 the pain become regular, every day and night.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

I had a diagnosis through a MRI when my ankle started to pain regularly. It takes 3 days for the results to come out.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

The rest before the surgery was the most useful thing that I could have done for my ankle.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

My biggest difficulties are the lack of movement and exersice, before and after the surgery. Due to lack of movement all my body hurts and I am weak. Also the emotional struggle is real.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

Due to the rareness of the illness most people cannot understand the pain and the difficulty. And many of them think that you are okay because you don't have any woods and you hide your pain. And none of them can understand that even if you have a surgery your life will not be the same anymore and the disease will never go fully away.

What things have you stopped doing?

For now I am not doing anything because I am in recovery after my surgery. When I will pass the stage of recovery, my doctor said that I will not be able to do sport activities and running anymore. Even the walking must be with a limit. Although he said that swimming will be good for me.

What do you think about the future?

It will be difficult with all the restrains and the pain, but I am positive.. something good must be come from all of this.

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

The best years of my life was the years that I was the most active person. The years that I had the less pain and the more activities.

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

If I didn't have my disease I will definetely be in the gym right now or at my work and after that in a dance club at night.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

Every 3 to 4 years I have to struggle with some medical problem.. Most often with my legs.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

Don't give up. Some people don't have the same abilities as others. But we all can achieve great things despite our condition. We just can not do the same things. It will come our time to shine, too!!
