Which are the causes of Peeling Skin Syndrome?

Peeling Skin Syndrome (PSS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the continuous shedding of the outermost layer of the skin. This condition can cause significant discomfort and affect the quality of life for those affected. While the exact cause of PSS is not fully understood, several factors have been identified as potential contributors to the development of this syndrome.

Genetic Mutations: PSS is primarily caused by genetic mutations that affect the proteins responsible for maintaining the integrity of the skin. These mutations can disrupt the normal functioning of the skin barrier, leading to excessive peeling and vulnerability to external factors.

Defective Filaggrin Protein: Filaggrin is a key protein involved in the formation of the skin's protective barrier. In individuals with PSS, mutations in the filaggrin gene can result in a defective or insufficient production of this protein. As a result, the skin becomes more susceptible to damage and peeling.

Impaired Epidermal Differentiation: The epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, undergoes a process called differentiation, where cells mature and form a protective barrier. In PSS, this process is disrupted, leading to abnormal cell turnover and impaired skin barrier function. This dysfunction can contribute to the peeling of the skin.
