Stephanie's interview

How did all start?

I am 55 years old, Ive had a annual mammogram for the last 5 years. In March of 2017 I had a cyst in my left breast I had a diagnostic mammogram and sonogram to confirm. No treatment necessary as the radiologist confirmed it was fluid filled and would resolve itself. I scheduled my annual mammogram in March of 2018. I got a call back for a diagnostic. I called thinking it could possibly be the cyst they saw the year before but they stated it was different so scheduled the diagnostic. When I went for my appointment they also did a sonogram. Then the doctor called me back and stated it had a solid mass in my left breast birads 4 and would need an ultrasound guided biopsy. I had that done a couple weeks later and received a call stating it was a fibroadenoma. Because of the fast growth he referred me to a surgeon. I had a savi scout placed and had a lumpectomy 4/29/18. Went for my follow up appointment to find out I have a benign phyllodes tumor. Knowing nothing I declined another surgery until I could do some research. Wow to my surprise information is very limited, but from all I’ve read I need clear margin which I don’t have. So I have made an appointment with a surgical oncologist for the 29th of may 2018.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

I do from the lumpectomy but not sure if the margins are sent in for pathology . This causes concern.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

So far the information that pours in from the phyllodes support group has helped although everyone has different treatment modalities.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

Getting the most updated information from medical professionals. I don’t need the answer if you were my wife you would have this surgery. Although I appreciate it. It makes realize the importance. All I heard is benign... why more surgery?

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

No changes just support

What things have you stopped doing?

I’ve been a bit obsessed .

What do you think about the future?

Unsure.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

I’m generally a very happy person. I’ve just been a little obsessive compulsive over the situation, but feel blessed as it could be worse.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

Research, get a second option quickly and join the phyllodes support group. They ground you and are super supportive. They have really made me appreciate where I am. I can’t speak enough about them. I will say I haven’t posted much but I’m constantly reading and learning and feelin very blessed.
