Living with Sarcoidosis

Living with Sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect various organs in the body, most commonly the lungs, lymph nodes, skin, and eyes. While there is no cure for sarcoidosis, there are ways to manage the symptoms and improve your quality of life. Here are some tips on how to live with sarcoidosis:

1. Educate Yourself

It is important to understand the nature of sarcoidosis and how it affects your body. Educate yourself about the disease, its symptoms, and potential complications. This knowledge will empower you to make informed decisions about your treatment and lifestyle choices.

2. Build a Support Network

Living with sarcoidosis can be challenging, both physically and emotionally. Surround yourself with a supportive network of family, friends, and healthcare professionals who understand your condition. They can provide encouragement, help you cope with the ups and downs, and offer assistance when needed.

3. Follow Your Treatment Plan

Work closely with your healthcare team to develop a personalized treatment plan. This may involve medications to reduce inflammation, manage symptoms, and prevent complications. It is crucial to take your medications as prescribed and attend regular check-ups to monitor your condition.

4. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Adopting a healthy lifestyle can have a positive impact on your overall well-being. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Regular exercise, as recommended by your healthcare provider, can help improve lung function, reduce fatigue, and boost your mood. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption, as they can worsen symptoms and interfere with medications.

5. Manage Stress

Stress can exacerbate sarcoidosis symptoms. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as practicing relaxation techniques (deep breathing, meditation, yoga), engaging in hobbies, spending time with loved ones, or seeking professional counseling if needed. Prioritize self-care and make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

6. Protect Your Lungs

Since sarcoidosis often affects the lungs, it is essential to take steps to protect them. Avoid exposure to environmental irritants, such as dust, chemicals, and pollutants. If necessary, wear a mask or respirator when in dusty or polluted environments. It is also advisable to get vaccinated against respiratory infections, such as flu and pneumonia, as these can worsen sarcoidosis symptoms.

7. Monitor Your Symptoms

Keep track of your symptoms and any changes in your condition. Note down any new or worsening symptoms, as well as triggers that may exacerbate them. This information will be valuable during your doctor's visits and can help guide your treatment plan.

8. Stay Positive

Living with a chronic illness like sarcoidosis can be challenging, but maintaining a positive outlook can make a significant difference. Surround yourself with positivity, engage in activities that bring you joy, and celebrate small victories along the way. Remember that you are not alone, and there is support available to help you navigate this journey.

Remember, always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance on managing your sarcoidosis.

You have to try and keep a positive and uplifting attitude. Its ok to be on antidepressants to help. Being sick sucks.. absolutely. But being negative, depressed and giving up is not an option. You can live a long happy life with sarcoid. But thats up to you and your specialist to make positive strides.

You must learn how to not stress over this disease because stress is sarcoids worst enemy. Sarcoidosis feeds on the purple monster called sarcoidosis. Purple being the color of sarcoidosis disease like pink is for cancer. Learn to meditate and relax. Avoid stressful life situations.

Your life does change when you are diagnosed with Sarcoidosis however you can find new things to do to replace the things you did previously which are now impossible in some cases. Joining chat forums and support groups helps to understand this disease and to find out that you are not alone in this strange journey. Being Happy is a choice we make when we make the best of things and try to be the best we can be. Pace yourself and plan life activities to look forward to but try to make them as flexible as possible to that if you have a bad day/week or time the activity can be moved to another time.

Once you accept that you are ill and that perhaps cannot do what you once could do, things can get better. It is trying to fight that wears you out. You can be happy but others may find it hard to understand your symptoms and the affect they have on your life.

Living with sarcoid is never easy
But what does help is a good team to turn to when things get on top of a patient
Keeping a positve mental attitude will help the person sinking into deep depression
Music and light exercise to help some one improve their mental health will work

Living with Sarcoidosis can be a challenge
Different people will have different limitations.
For fatigue it is important to understand how much you can do before exhausting yourself.
Sadly this will be a lot less than before you became effected by the illness.
The most important thing is understanding your personal journey.

It can be simple or very complex depending on your severity. For me, I have a team of Doctors. I live in daily pain with fatigue and some days are worse than others. On good days do what you can and on bad days rest. I always keep a good attitude with humor. I don't dwell on the pain/ negative/ difficult life I have been given.
