My basic TM story

I was hit with TM on May 14th 2008. My wife and I were on vacation in Erie, PA visiting my mom. I was awakened at 1:00am with what I thought was a bad leg cramp...So I got out of bed and tried walking it off....I was trying to be quiet because my wife was sleeping. 

After a couple of minutes, the feeling wasn't getting any better, in fact it started gettingworse and both legs were starting to cramp and burn with pain. This was within about 10 minutes...and then the pain started creeping up into my groin area and up to my waist...

By this point my wife had woken up and she obviously wondered what was going on...I told her I didn't know but it wasn't good...I spent another few minutes hoping and praying that the pain would go away but it kept getting more intense.

By now my wife had woken my mom and called the paramedics and by the time the paramedics got to the house, I was paralyzed from the waist down and was in excruciating pain.

I was transported to the hospital and admitted to the trauma unit and after a multitude of tests...blood work, spinal taps, MRI's, Cat Scans etc...I was finally diagnosed on May 15th with Transverse Myelitis.

I had never heard of it before and wondered what it was....as did my mom and my wife...we were all stupefied as to what this was and how it happened. My lesion area is from L1 – S1. 

So, I spent 7 days there in Erie at the hospital and my wife and I finally managed to getthe hospital let me be transferred back to Canton. So, with my wife driving, I was transferred back to Canton, to Mercy Medical Center and put into an inpatient rehab unit to start rehab and to have my symptoms monitored.

I was there for 8 days and then released to go home but continued outpatient rehab fora year. 2 - 3 times a week for one year I was in rehab and managed to recover enough to be able to walk with a cane.

I have many residual symptoms that I will have for the rest of my life...and I also live with neuropathic pain 24/7...
