Story about Aplastic Anemia .

My diagnosis of Aplastic Anemia

Dec 2, 2

I was going to have weight loss surgery.  I had finally made up my mind to do it, and began all the pre testing that goes along with it.  It was under the recommendation of my general physician.  I had a blood test but the only thing they said about it was to come back and take another test to make sure I didn't have H Pylori.  In the meantime, I was completely out of breath with a racing heart, and my ankles were very swollen.  I went back to my primary doctor to have him look at the swelling.  He mentioned that he didn't see my tests that were run yet from my weight loss surgeon, and that he was going to check on everything.  I left his office and went to work.  That same day around noon he called me and told me I had to leave work and go have my bloodwork done again immediately.  He didn't know how I was even functioning because my numbers were so low.  This of course made me nervous but my coworker assured me it was just probably a glitch in the reading.  I went and had my CBC drawn again.  That evening I went to my son's football game.  It was the last one in which parents of players were walking out onto the field with their son as it was the last game at that field.  He was an eigth grader.  Just as we were about to walk out my Dr. called and said I needed to go to his office right away.  I was beyond scared.  I walked out onto the field trying not to break down.  I left with my husband to go see my Dr.  He told us about the low levels, red, platelets, white and I broke down sobbing stating that I didn't want to die.  He assured me I wouldn't.  I made him promise!  I had to be admitted to the hospital that night.  I needed transfusions.  Three bone marrow biopsies later, I was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia.  I had horse ATG and am still on Cyclosporine and am now on Promacta.  My numbers have gone up some.  They aren't wonderful but they aren't horrible.  I'm kind of in a gray area.  I've been transfusion independent for almost one year.  My oncologist is trying not to have me do a BMT unless absolutely necessary.  I go to see him tomorrow to see what my numbers are looking like.  My fingers are crossed.
