Symptoms of Van der Woude Syndrome

Van der Woude syndrome (VWS) is a rare genetic disorder that primarily affects the development of the face and mouth. It is characterized by a combination of cleft lip and/or cleft palate, along with other distinctive features. The severity and specific symptoms can vary widely among individuals with VWS.

Cleft Lip and/or Cleft Palate: One of the hallmark features of Van der Woude syndrome is the presence of a cleft lip and/or cleft palate. A cleft lip is a split or opening in the upper lip, while a cleft palate is a split or opening in the roof of the mouth. These abnormalities occur during fetal development and can cause difficulties with feeding, speech, and dental issues.

Lip Pits: Another common feature of VWS is the presence of lip pits. Lip pits are small depressions or openings in the lower lip, typically located near the midline. These pits may be barely noticeable or more pronounced, and they can sometimes be mistaken for a small dimple or a small cyst. Lip pits are usually harmless and do not cause any significant health problems.

Dental Abnormalities: Individuals with Van der Woude syndrome often have dental abnormalities, which can include missing teeth (hypodontia), extra teeth (supernumerary teeth), or misalignment of the teeth (malocclusion). These dental issues can impact the overall oral health and may require orthodontic treatment or other dental interventions.

Speech and Language Difficulties: The presence of cleft lip and/or cleft palate in VWS can affect speech and language development. The openings in the lip and/or palate can interfere with the proper formation of sounds, leading to speech difficulties such as nasal speech or articulation problems. Speech therapy and corrective surgeries are often necessary to improve communication skills.

Feeding Problems: Infants with Van der Woude syndrome may experience difficulties with feeding due to the cleft lip and/or cleft palate. The openings in the lip and/or palate can make it challenging for the baby to create a proper seal while breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. Special feeding techniques and devices may be required to ensure adequate nutrition and hydration.

Other Facial Features: While the primary features of VWS involve the mouth and lip, individuals with this syndrome may also exhibit other facial characteristics. These can include a flattened or broadened nasal bridge, a small or recessed chin (micrognathia), and an increased distance between the inner corners of the eyes (hypertelorism).

Genetic Inheritance: Van der Woude syndrome is typically inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, which means that an affected individual has a 50% chance of passing the condition on to each of their children. However, in some cases, VWS can occur sporadically without a family history of the syndrome.

It is important to note that the symptoms and severity of Van der Woude syndrome can vary significantly among individuals. Some individuals may only have mild features, while others may have more pronounced abnormalities. Early diagnosis and appropriate medical management, including surgical interventions and supportive therapies, can greatly improve the quality of life for individuals with VWS.
