Treatments for Visual Snow

Visual snow is a condition characterized by the perception of tiny flickering dots or static in a person's visual field. It can be a distressing and debilitating condition, affecting a person's quality of life. While there is no known cure for visual snow, there are several treatment options that can help manage the symptoms and improve daily functioning.

1. Lifestyle Modifications

Lifestyle modifications can play a significant role in managing visual snow symptoms. These include:

  • Avoiding triggers such as bright lights, excessive screen time, and stress.

  • Getting regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet.

  • Practicing stress-reducing techniques like meditation or deep breathing exercises.

2. Medications

Medications may be prescribed to help alleviate the symptoms of visual snow. These can include:

  • Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) such as lamotrigine or topiramate have shown some success in reducing visual snow symptoms.

  • Migraine medications like amitriptyline or propranolol may be prescribed if visual snow is associated with migraines.

  • Anti-anxiety medications can help manage the anxiety and stress that often accompany visual snow.

3. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be beneficial for individuals with visual snow, especially if they experience anxiety or depression related to their symptoms. CBT helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and develop coping strategies to manage their condition.

4. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain. It has shown promise in reducing visual snow symptoms in some individuals, although more research is needed to determine its effectiveness.

5. Supportive Therapies

Supportive therapies can provide emotional and psychological support to individuals with visual snow. These may include:

  • Support groups where individuals can connect with others experiencing similar symptoms and share coping strategies.

  • Psychoeducation to help individuals understand their condition better and manage their expectations.

  • Stress management techniques like relaxation exercises or biofeedback.

It is important to note that the effectiveness of treatments for visual snow can vary from person to person. What works for one individual may not work for another. It is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional experienced in visual snow to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

As of June 2019, there are no real treatments. I know for me personally stress, anxiety and depression can agitate the static portion of VS (visual snow). My optometrist recommended mediation and yoga to help relax and although I haven't noticed a huge difference, it's generally been helpful not just for my VS.
It is also not uncommon for antidepressants / anxiety medication to help with the symptoms of VS, and I know for me it has been helpful.

What is the treatment for visual snow syndrome?

No current treatment has proven effective for treating visual snow syndrome. Researchers are continuing to investigate potential options.

Current evidence suggests the medications that prevent migraine, such as antidepressants or pain medications, don’t consistently improve or worsen visual snow syndrome. One single case studyTrusted Source found potential benefits with the drug lamotrigine.

Recreational drugs and alcohol can worsen symptoms, at least temporarily.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is under investigation as a potential treatment. Some researchTrusted Source suggests it may be beneficial, but larger studies are needed to fully explore its use. TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate neurons in your brain.
