Symptoms of Wandering Spleen

Wandering spleen, also known as splenic ptosis or splenic torsion, is a rare condition characterized by the abnormal mobility or displacement of the spleen from its normal position in the upper left abdomen. This condition occurs when the ligaments that hold the spleen in place become weak or stretched, allowing the spleen to move freely within the abdomen.

The symptoms of wandering spleen can vary depending on the degree of displacement and the presence of complications. Some individuals may experience no symptoms at all, while others may develop severe symptoms that require immediate medical attention.

Abdominal pain: One of the most common symptoms of wandering spleen is abdominal pain. The pain may be intermittent or constant and can range from mild to severe. It is typically felt in the left upper abdomen but can radiate to other areas of the abdomen or back.

Abdominal mass: In some cases, a palpable mass may be felt in the abdomen. This mass represents the displaced spleen and can be detected during a physical examination.

Abdominal fullness or bloating: Due to the displacement of the spleen, individuals with wandering spleen may experience a sensation of fullness or bloating in the abdomen. This can be accompanied by increased gassiness or discomfort.

Abdominal tenderness: The abdomen may be tender to touch, especially in the area where the spleen is displaced. This tenderness can worsen with movement or pressure.

Abdominal distension: In some cases, the displacement of the spleen can lead to abdominal distension or swelling. This can be due to the enlarged size of the spleen or the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen.

Feeling of dragging or pulling: Some individuals with wandering spleen may experience a sensation of dragging or pulling in the abdomen. This can be caused by the movement of the displaced spleen and the stretching of surrounding tissues.

Intermittent torsion: In rare cases, the wandering spleen can twist or rotate on its own axis, leading to intermittent torsion. This can cause severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and even a decrease in blood flow to the spleen, which can be a medical emergency.

Complications: If left untreated, wandering spleen can lead to various complications such as splenic infarction (loss of blood supply to the spleen), splenic rupture, or abdominal infection. These complications can cause severe pain, fever, and require immediate medical intervention.

If you suspect you may have a wandering spleen or are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, it is important to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a physical examination, order imaging tests such as ultrasound or CT scan, and recommend appropriate treatment options.
