How did all start?
I discovered a lump in my left breast about a year ago, Nov 2016.
Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?
I currently have been diagnosed with a low-grade Phyllodes tumor. As of March 2017 and my ultrasound the results were suspicious for a fibroadenoma, but 2 days after my lumpectomy I was diagnosed with a Phyllodes tumor.
For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?
Phyllodes tumor treated by a breast surgeon.
What has been the most useful thing for you so far?
My diagnosis was low-grade/benign so I'm feeling good that I have not developed anything malignant.
What have been your biggest difficulties?
Surgeries have made me suffer in my productivity a little bit and the site of the surgery has made it more painful to do one of my favorite activities, running.
How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?
My social environment has been very supportive and caring.
What things have you stopped doing?
None.
What do you think about the future?
Worried for a tumor to grow back but appear malignant.
So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?
This has been the best year of my life. I have a wonderful loving husband, 2 dogs, and have achieved many milestones as a doctoral student this year. Also received news about my husband traveling to New Zealand for work so I am ecstatic to visit a new country.
What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?
Nothing, I'd be doing the same things I do now with our without my condition. I will still be able to live my life exactly how I would have without my condition.
If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?
Everything I have ever wanted it to be.
Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?
Don't panic. Although a rare condition, the right doctors will help you and monitor you to make sure everything is under control. You are not alone!
