A Síndrome de Williams interview .

Danilo Harmuth's interview

How did all start?

I started at age of 3 months with physiotherapy, because my head was falling to one side. Over time my physiotherapist realized that something was not ok (I had difficulties by eating, crawling, I cried a lot and so on). For these reasons, the physio asked my parents to take me to a neurologist. He sent us to a geneticist, and at age of nine months we got the diagnosis.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

Yes, I have. At age of nine months we knew what I have. The F.I.S.H. Test took about 2 weeks.

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

Physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

Sports are very important for me and my muscles, my back ( I have scoliosis). Also a riding therapy with cool horses helped me very much. Learning African drums helps my coordination.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

Learning chewing, walking.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

My parents educate me in a very normal way. They taught me that I can be whatever I want. They support me a lot. I have many friends. I feel myself accepted how I am.

What things have you stopped doing?

Nothing!

What do you think about the future?

I will attend a vocational school in September 18. We found a good one, where I can learn a lot of creative things. I’m excited about it. Maybe I can work with music in the future too.

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

The best years started at the age of 12, as I changed school. At the first school (Montessoriwith inclusion) I suffered a lot bullying. At the second it was absolutely great!

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

I don’t think that my condition stops me doing what I want. I just need more time to learn things, but I can do it. I just would wish that society accept us without making any difference.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

Never give up to believe in myself.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

You are a beautiful person with a lot of skills. Never give up to follow your dreams, no matter what. We are strong together.
