Life expectancy for people with Edwards syndrome is very low. Ninety percent of patients do not reach one year old, and the median of survival is less than one month. Some exceptional cases have a better life expectancy and may reach adolescence. Life expectancy is higher in girls with Edwards syndrome than in boys and is also higher in non-white races.

The main causes of death are central apneas and pneumonia. Better clinical care and care for the child may be likely to improve their lifespan, but life expectancy depends primarily on the severity of each case and the systems affected.
