What is Erythema Multiforme

Erythema Multiforme description. Find out what Erythema Multiforme is and know more about it.

Erythema Multiforme (EM) is a skin condition characterized by the development of distinctive skin lesions. It is typically triggered by an immune response to certain infections or medications. The condition is more common in young adults and males.

The hallmark of EM is the presence of target-like or iris lesions on the skin, which appear as red, raised patches with a dark center. These lesions can be found on the limbs, face, and trunk. EM can also affect mucous membranes, such as the mouth and eyes, causing discomfort and pain.

The exact cause of EM is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a hypersensitivity reaction. Infections, particularly herpes simplex virus and mycoplasma pneumoniae, are common triggers. Certain medications, such as antibiotics and anticonvulsants, can also induce EM.

Most cases of EM resolve on their own within a few weeks to months, with appropriate supportive care. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and addressing the underlying cause. Topical corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation, while antiviral medications can be used if a viral infection is identified.

It is important to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of Erythema Multiforme.
