The exact causes of Evans syndrome are unknown. It is an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies attack platelets and red blood cells by destroying them. Patients with Evans syndrome often have lymph node hyperactivity accompanied by decreased immunoglobulin IgA, IgM and IgG immunoglobulins as well as other T-lymphocyte abnormalities.

It's completely unknown. I'd had a cold for a few months that wouldn't shift when I had my last big relapse but I'd experienced an episode of low platelets before that which was completely out of the blue. One often overlooked risk factor for autoimmune conditions generally is childhood trauma. It's a substantial risk factor. Viruses might be a trigger too. There are no known obvious genetic links.
