What is Hallucinogen Persistent Perception Disorder

Hallucinogen Persistent Perception Disorder description. Find out what Hallucinogen Persistent Perception Disorder is and know more about it.

Hallucinogen Persistent Perception Disorder (HPPD) is a condition characterized by the persistent reoccurrence of perceptual disturbances, similar to those experienced during hallucinogenic drug use, without the presence of the drug in the body. These perceptual disturbances can include visual disturbances, such as seeing flashes of light, trails, or geometric patterns, as well as changes in perception of colors and shapes. HPPD can also involve other sensory disturbances, such as auditory or tactile hallucinations.

The exact cause of HPPD is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to alterations in brain chemistry and neural pathways resulting from past hallucinogen use. The disorder can be distressing and interfere with daily functioning, causing anxiety and difficulty concentrating.

Treatment for HPPD typically involves a combination of therapy and medication. Therapy may include cognitive-behavioral techniques to help individuals cope with the symptoms and reduce anxiety. Medications such as anti-anxiety drugs or antipsychotics may be prescribed to alleviate symptoms.

It is important to seek professional help if you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of HPPD.

Wikipedia and Erowid are much better at explaining this than I.

HPPD is an inter-related dynamic dysfunction between many modalities giving rise the various visual disturbances. An inhibitory cortical interneuron, which expresses 5-HT2a receptors and releases GABA upon activation in the V1 in the visual cortex and/or in the lateral geniculate nucleus in the thalamus. This will explain after images and halos because inhibitory signals are important to suppress neural response to stimuli. R. Lijens et, al.
