What are the latest advances in Osteonecrosis?

Here you can see the latest advances and discoveries made regarding Osteonecrosis.

Stem cell decompression, injecting stem cells with your bone marrow and sending it through previous drilled holes in the joint in an attempt to bring the joint back"PARTIALLY".... to avoid total collapse and buy time till the replacement is necessary.

Options to halt the progression of AVN include core decompression, osteotomy and medical treatments. Results associated with these options have been disappointing, with up to 40 percent of patients progressing to total hip arthroplasty. Despite the challenges in bone tissue engineering being very frustrating, there remains tremendous optimism concerning the potential to replace damaged and degenerated structures and tissue. The integration of multiple disciplines, such as cell biology, molecular biology, biomechanics science, immunology, structure engineering science, computer science, three-dimensional printing technology, and translational science, may accelerate bone tissue engineering development and product translation. These advances might improve bone healing by alternative approaches in surgery and facilitate the prognosis of ONFH. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214031X15000698#sec5

Replacement if joints are the best

Core decompression with the injection of stem cells holds some promise in the early stages of diagnosis. The success rate is about 50%. Bone grafting is also showing some promise, but these treatments only help with the immediate short term.

There is research into surgery that can be done earlier in disease progression that could return blood flow to the bone. If the dead bone is then replaced by the body and the blood supply remains intact the original joint could be kept symptom free long term. That kind of treatment could be less invasive than a total joint replacement.
