What is Ostomy

Ostomy description. Find out what Ostomy is and know more about it.

An ostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the body for the discharge of waste products when the normal route of elimination is no longer functional. This procedure is typically performed when a person's digestive or urinary system is unable to function properly due to various medical conditions or diseases.

During an ostomy, a surgeon creates an opening called a stoma on the abdomen, which allows waste to exit the body and be collected in a pouch or bag. There are different types of ostomies depending on the location of the stoma:

  • Colostomy: A stoma created from the colon to divert stool.

  • Ileostomy: A stoma created from the small intestine to divert stool.

  • Urostomy: A stoma created from the urinary system to divert urine.

Ostomies can be temporary or permanent, depending on the individual's condition. People with ostomies may need to adjust their lifestyle and use specialized products to manage the collection of waste. However, with proper care and support, individuals with ostomies can lead fulfilling and active lives.
