Trigeminal Neuralgia, also known as tic douloureux, is a severe facial pain disorder affecting the trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for facial sensation. The condition is characterized by sudden, intense, and recurrent episodes of facial pain, typically triggered by normal activities such as eating, speaking, or even light touch.
In the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10), the specific code for Trigeminal Neuralgia is G50.0. This code falls under the category of "Disorders of trigeminal nerve," which encompasses various conditions affecting the functioning of the trigeminal nerve.
On the other hand, in the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD-9), Trigeminal Neuralgia is identified by code 350.1. Under ICD-9, this code falls under the category of "Trigeminal Neuralgia and Other Facial Neuralgias," which includes similar facial pain disorders.

The excruciating pain can be debilitating, leading to difficulty in performing daily activities and causing emotional distress. Clinical Information
A syndrome characterized by recurrent episodes of excruciating pain lasting several seconds or longer in the sensory distribution of the trigeminal nerve. Pain may be initiated by stimulation of trigger points on the face, lips, or gums or by movement of facial muscles or chewing. Associated conditions include multiple sclerosis, vascular anomalies, aneurysms, and neoplasms. (Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p187)
Can you imagine feeling a shock in your face as you brush your teeth or shave? if you have trigeminal neuralgia (tn), you may know exactly what it's like. You may feel extreme numbness, tingling or burning on a part of your face. Any vibration on your face, even from talking, can set it off. The condition may come and go, disappearing for days or even months. But the longer you have it, the less often it goes away. Your trigeminal nerve is responsible for sensations on your face. The cause of tn is probably a blood vessel pressing on the trigeminal nerve. Tumors and multiple sclerosis can also cause tn, but in some cases the cause is unknown.tn usually affects people over 50, especially women. Medicines and sometimes surgery can help with the pain.

I don't understand what this means, I am UK based but this is what the web says.
"ICD-9-CM 350.1 is a billable medical code that can be used to indicate a diagnosis on a reimbursement claim, however, 350.1 should only be used for claims with a date of service on or before September 30, 2015. For claims with a date of service on or after October 1, 2015, use an equivalent ICD-10-CM code (or codes)."
"G50.0 is a billable/specific ICD-10-CM code that can be used to indicate a diagnosis for reimbursement purposes."
