Symptoms of West Nile Virus

The West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause a range of symptoms, from mild flu-like symptoms to severe neurological complications. It is important to be aware of the symptoms associated with WNV in order to seek medical attention and receive appropriate treatment.

1. Mild Symptoms

Most people infected with West Nile Virus do not develop any symptoms. However, approximately 20% of infected individuals may experience mild symptoms, which can include:

  • Fever: Low-grade fever is a common symptom of WNV infection. It may last for a few days or even a week.

  • Headache: Many individuals infected with WNV may experience mild to moderate headaches.

  • Fatigue: Feeling tired or fatigued is another common symptom associated with WNV infection.

  • Body aches: Muscle aches and joint pain are often reported by individuals with WNV.

  • Skin rash: Some people may develop a rash on the trunk of their body or on their arms and legs.

  • Swollen lymph nodes: In some cases, lymph nodes near the site of the mosquito bite may become swollen and tender.

2. Severe Symptoms

In rare cases, approximately 1 in 150 people infected with WNV may develop severe symptoms, which can lead to serious complications. These severe symptoms may include:

  • High fever: Severe cases of WNV infection can cause high fever, often accompanied by other symptoms.

  • Stiff neck: Some individuals may experience a stiff neck, which can be a sign of meningitis or encephalitis.

  • Severe headache: Intense headaches that are persistent and worsen over time may indicate neurological involvement.

  • Disorientation or confusion: Severe cases of WNV can affect the central nervous system, leading to confusion, disorientation, or even coma.

  • Tremors or muscle weakness: Muscle weakness, tremors, or even paralysis may occur in severe cases.

  • Seizures: Some individuals may experience seizures as a result of WNV infection.

  • Vision loss: In rare cases, WNV can cause inflammation of the optic nerve, leading to vision loss.

3. Long-Term Complications

Even after recovering from the acute illness, some individuals may experience long-term complications as a result of WNV infection. These complications can include:

  • Fatigue: Prolonged fatigue and weakness may persist for weeks or months after the initial infection.

  • Memory problems: Some individuals may experience difficulties with memory and concentration.

  • Depression: WNV infection can also contribute to the development of depression or other mood disorders.

  • Muscle weakness: Weakness and muscle fatigue may persist, affecting daily activities.

If you suspect you have been infected with West Nile Virus and are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned, it is important to seek medical attention. While there is no specific treatment for WNV, healthcare professionals can provide supportive care to manage the symptoms and monitor for any complications. Additionally, taking preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing, can help reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

During initial phase, headaches/migraines (I had WNV Encephalitis in 2013). After the initial infection, fatigue is by far the worst, following by chronic pain.
